How do I get credit for student loan payments?

My grandfather co-signed a private student loan for me. Now that I am done with school, I am the one paying off the loan but since my grandfather co-signed it shows up on his credit report and not mine. Is there anyway for me to get this added to my credit history? Or is there something else I can do for the future, if necessary, to show that I have actually been making the payments and not my grandfather. Thanks!

How do I get credit for student loan payments?
If you grandfather co-signed, it should show on both of your credit reports. Check the loan docs to see if you signed it. If you did, you can call the lending institution and request they start reporting it. If not, get the loan number and address information of the lender and send a letter to all three credit bureaus requesting they add this to your profile. Also let them know that the FCRA charges them with accurate reporting of information. They may charge you a small fee to get this done.

Another option is to have your grandfather refinance it and then make sure you are on the loan. You may also inquire with student loan consolidation lenders and they will simply put it under your name, I am not sure however if they will only do that if you are not in deferment period.
Reply:I would call the creditor and ask which bureaus they report to. I would then goto annualcreditreport.com and pull your credit for free.

If you don't see the tradeline and the credit reporting. I would then write a dispute letter, and ask that the creditor report this on your bureau. Believe it or not, some companies choose to not report on credit bureaus, because there is a cost involved. If you dispute this, then the creditor is notified, and yes they then will have to report on the bureaus.

Hope this answers your question.

If you are looking for good dispute letters, goto homebycountrywide, and review some of the information there. Otherwise, check with myfico.com.

Good luck
